What wind?

“Perserverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after another.” – Walter Elliott

The Open Championship is upon us.  This is one of, if not the greatest golf tournament for any true fan of golf to watch.  To be able to witness a tournament as old, this being the 141st championship, and prestigious, allows us to become a part of golf history.

The Open Championship presents what is considerably the most demanding test of a golfers skills.  The winner this week will possess several qualities about their golf game and themselves.  They will be able to hit a variety of shots, handle difficult lies and situations on the course, face constantly changing weather, all while maintaining patience to keep everything moving in a positive direction.

A shot that all players will have to possess this week is the ability to control the flight of their golf ball through the wind.  This is one shot that most players take the wrong approach to.  If you are playing into a strong headwind the mentality is to swing harder, to get more distance out of your shot.  Nothing could be worse.  The harder you swing, the more spin you will impart on the golf ball, and the more the wind will wreak havoc on your shot.

What we should all do, and you will see demonstrated this week, is to take more club and swing easier.  This will place less spin on the ball preventing the wind to impart as much influence on the flight of your shot.   You are able to see this demonstrated by our PGA Professional visiting our short tips on You Tube.

I would like to congratulate all of the participants in The Open Championship, and wish you the best of luck in placing your name in golfing history.  I wish you the best of luck in your next championship and making your own history.
