The Power Of Numbers

The new Golf Magazine or Golf Digest has arrived in your mailbox.  You quickly open it and start flipping through the pages looking for any tip that might help your game.  The vast majority of you probably scan through a magazine in about 30 minutes, and put it down never to be looked at again until it’s headed to the recycling bin.

But for those of you who actually “read” those magazines, you have to have been noticing the articles that keep alluding to the power of statistics and golf.  This is a growing trend on the PGA Tour, and probably on a lesser scale, at your local golf club as well.  Heck, if your reading this article, your on a website solely dedicated to tracking stats and providing help to golfers everywhere (that’s what Pinchaser does just in case you weren’t already aware).

But what do all of the numbers mean?  Sure they can tell you how many fairways you miss to the right, or how often your able to get up and down from a greenside bunker.  But how does that help you when your playing your next round?  In a recent article in Golf Magazine, this was perfectly discussed.  Brandt Snedeker, you know, the guy who won the FedEx Cup and over $10,000,000 in 2012, was looked at.  When he looked at his stats, he realized that he wasn’t the best driver of the ball, or the best at chipping and pitching.  What he noticed, was that he was really good at putting.  So headed into the 2012 British Open, he came up with a game plan.  “Just hit the damn green.”  If he could get is approach shots on the green, he would likely out-putt everyone in the field and have the best chance at winning the event.  He ended up finishing third in that event, but went on to have a pretty remarkable year.

By looking at your stats, you can develop your own game plan.  Maybe your a great iron player, but because you miss several fairways you’re not able to capitalize on that ability.  Put more emphasis on your driving the ball in play, and you’ll likely hit more greens and shoot lower scores.  Simple isn’t it.  Take a little time and review your numbers.  Create a game plan before you head out for your next round of golf.  Figure out one area that you need to put an emphasis on, so that you can best use the strengths of your golf game.  Don’t have your stats, I know a great place to track them….www.pinchasergolf.com.
